April 15, 2013. That day was going to be a beautiful outing for many families who wanted nothing more than to see their friends run the Boston Marathon. But tragedy struck when two Chechen-American brothers detonated two home-made bombs and left 3 people dead and more than 200 injured. Many lives were shattered, but many of them managed to stay resilient. Now, four years later, a woman has found love and is set to marry the firefighter who saved her life that day. He proposed to her after spending helping her through the transition of losing a leg and facing her new life. Now these two are set to be married, proving there’s light at the end of the tunnel if you fight for what you want.
MEET ROSEANN SDOIA
The Boston local had plans on that fateful day. She was set to meet with friends and her mother at a bar to watch the runners cross the finish line at the Boston Marathon. She was single at that point and didn’t think that day would be eventful in any way.
SHE GOT A TEXT SAYING HER FRIENDS WERE NEAR THE FINISH LINE
So she took to the street, and stood near a box and a mailbox on the sidewalk. While she patiently waited, she heard a distant explosion. Everyone panicked and started to run, and she did so straight towards that box, which happened to have the second bomb that went off.
BUT THE BOX EXPLODED RIGHT NEXT TO HER
She lost her right leg in an instant and the worst part is she actually felt it. She yelled for help and some strangers helped her get to an ambulance, as angels walk among us. One of these strangers was named Mike. Faith would end up reuniting these two in the most odd way!
MIKE MATERIA WAS A FIREFIGHTER AT THE SCENE
Human superhero Mike managed to help a lot of people that tragic day, but he provided first aid to Roseann, and helped comfort her until a doctor could take over. Empathy brought them together, but helping out this victim isn’t the only thing he did. He managed to be more than a shoulder to cry on in such a tragic day. Later on, they would end up meeting again.
WHILE AT THE HOSPITAL ROSEANN HAD A HARD TIME
But her mother was there to support her. She mentioned how cute Mike was in an attempt to get her mind off things. “Oh, did you see that firefighter? He’s so cute” she would constantly say to Roseann. Imagine their surprise when Mike himself paid a visit in person! He was more than cute, he was professional and extremely empathetic!
A RELATIONSHIP BLOSSOMED
Sparks flew every time he visited Roseann until one day, they started officially dating in June. “I knew I was starting to have feelings for him because he was so kind and caring,” said Roseann. “And he has an unbelievable smile.”
SHE GOT A NEW PROSTHETIC LEG
After her recovery, Roseann wanted nothing more than to go back to living a normal life. She didn’t dwell much in the past and focused on her new amazing and heroic boyfriend instead. Together, they spent some wonderful times and hey even got a dog to complete their fairy tale!
On December 2016 Mike thought it was time to tie the knot with this powerful and resilient woman he’d fallen in love with, so he got a special tag for their dog that said “Mike wants to know if you’ll marry him.” He proposed atop the Whaling Museum in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Unsurprisingly, she said yes!
IN SICKNESS AND IN HEALTH
Mike has always been there for her since the day they met, and she knows it. When the bombings happened Roseann asked Mike, “I asked him if I was going to die. And he told me that I was going to be OK, that I only had a flesh wound.” She said he’s seen her in “her worst day.” Now she’s getting ready to lead a gorgeous new life in the company of the man she truly believes is a walking superhero.
LIVING LIFE TO THE FULLEST
Today, they make it a point to live each moment to the fullest. They ran the charitable event “Empire State Building Run-Up” and plan to release a book about their story of tragedy and love. And, of course, they have their wedding to look forward to, sometime in the fall. Here comes the bride!
