Disney princesses are the epitome of beauty, purity, and kindness, but Philadelphia-based photographer Shannon Dermody has opened up a portal from the enchanted forest and thrust some of our most beloved characters into the darkest and most graphic aspects of our sad reality. These images will kill your inner child.
You might think that these interpretations are horrifying and dark, but Dermody, who is majoring in photography at the Antonelli Institute in Philadelphia, PA brought these extreme moments to life to show awareness to some serious real life issues that we should all pay closer attention to. Let’s take a look.
PART OF YOUR WORLD
When Ariel crossed over to our world, she became the victim of pollution, and like most sea-faring creatures, the collection of trash, and plastic bottles wound up killing her.
BEHIND THE FAIR FAçADE
There’s no denying Belle would’ve had a tragic finally had she attempted to date her kidnapper, the Beast. So what if the beast was as hideous on the inside as he was on the outside? Clearly, no rose could ever make up for being physically abused.
A CHAIN SMOKING POINT OF VIEW
Instead of a new fantastic point of view, Jasmine took up smoking, because clearly, there aren’t enough wishes to make your dreams come true. Also, there are only so many unbelievable sights, indescribable feelings and over sideways and under magic carpet rides you can experience before you get bored. And sadly, teenagers are often turning to drugs in order to avoid feeling bored.
SOME DAY HER DREAMS WON’T COME
Most fairy tales have a happy ending, but we never get to see what happens after the end of the story. In Dermody’s interpretation, Snow White ended up living unhappily ever after, while drowning her sorrows with lots of booze.
HEROIN VS HEROINE
Disney might have fooled you into believing that Merida from “Brave” was a true heroine, but in the real world, she’s more of a heroin addict. Guess she couldn’t handle living in a realm with no kingdom to save.
THE PERFECT NIGHTMARE
In the original version of Sleeping Beauty, Aurora wasn’t awakened from her sleeping curse by true love’s kiss, but rather raped by the king as she slept. It wasn’t until one of the twins she gave birth to, sucked the poison thorn out of her fingers that she woke up.
THE GIRL WHO WAITED
Rapunzel spent years trapped in that tower. How many people could actually handle that? It’s not like she had a crystal ball to tell her that Flynn Rider would come to her rescue. So in Dermody’s version, she used her hair to end her suffering. Sadly, many youngsters are turning to suicide due to feeling lonely.
THE PRINCESS AND THE COP
In an effort to shed a little light on police brutality, Dermody ended Tiana’s hard working and ambitious dream of one day opening the finest restaurant in New Orleans when she took a detour into our world and experienced what it was like to be a minority.
Cinderella’s only fear had been that she wouldn’t get back in time before the carriage turned back into a pumpkin, but instead she wound up as a sex slave for a sex trafficking ring in this very upsetting real-world photoshoot that depicts the horrible issues we’re facing today.
