During your teen years, you were probably busy hanging out with friends, going to the movies or planning which dance to go to in school. For Jorge Campos, it was a completely different story. After his father lost his job, his family became homeless and he decided to help them do something about it. Right before Jorge Campos started high school, his father was left unemployed. This brought about many family economic issues, leaving them homeless for three months.

How did he manage to pay for college? You might wonder… Well, Jorge joined USC’S Upward Bound Math and Science program, a federal fund that helps put low-income students through college.

Jorge claims he couldn’t have gone so far if it wasn’t for this USC program. This federal-funded program trains academic achievers in science, math, and technology; preparing them for Ivy League universities, and allowing them to complete internships.

The new home of the Campos family was 70 miles away from Jorge’s high school. Since he’s no stranger to rising to the occasion, he commuted for two years to make it to class—that’s what we call school spirit!

Thanks to his great efforts as a high school student and the program he joined, Jorge got accepted into nothing less than Harvard University. He will be attending classes during the fall to follow a career in Economics.
