You all remember Freddie Mercury, the lead vocalist from Queen, who kept his sexuality to himself, despite his flamboyant stage persona. I mean, who could forget Bohemian Rhapsody, and Another One Bites The Dust? Sadly, The Tanzanian-born British singer is no longer with us, but some personal pics of his have resurfaced, giving us a brand new insight into this popular and beloved gay musical icon. His secret life will for sure, rock you!
FREDDIE’S BETTER HALF
It turns out that Freddie had a partner named Jim Hutton, a hairdresser whom he met in the mid 80s, but they didn’t exactly hit it off the first time or the second time. Maybe it was their matching mustaches?
FEEL THE LOVE
It wasn’t until the two met two years later for a third time at a club they frequented that Freddie’s persistence won Jim Hutton over, and the two hooked up, and let’s just say it was a match made in heaven.
SOFT KITTY, WARM KITTY
These two loved music, art, good food, and… pussycats? The two were very happy together. In fact, Freddie used to call home while he was touring just to hear the cat’s purr.
THE GREAT PRETENDER
When he sang “The Great Pretender,” an original song from “The Platters,” the lyrics, “I seem to be what I’m not you see,” totally made perfect sense, given his secret love life during a time when being open wasn’t always safe.
SEAL THOSE LIPS
Freddie’s lips remained sealed about his sexuality for most of his career. It might explain why he often smiled with his lips closed. You can pretty much see the same smile in most photos. It’s his natural face.
THEY LOOK ALIKE, THEY TALK ALIKE
If gay marriage had been legal decades ago, we’re pretty sure that these two would have gotten married and enjoyed their lives in the open. They look so much alike and are so handsome too, that they would’ve probably made one power gay couple these days, had they been born in the right era.
FREDDIE RUBBED OFF
It looks like Freddie’s flamboyant style rubbed off on his partner, Jim. Just look at that hat? It looks like they went to the Kentucky Derby. Hey, no judgment! Every gal needs a stylish hat when they’re out and about.
Here’s Jim with Freddie and the famous geisha, Mineko Iwasaki in between them. Mercury looks so serene in these photos. It almost brings a tear to your eyes to know that he’s no longer with us.
HIT ME BABY ONE MORE TIME
Like most relationships, Jim and Freddie had their ups and downs, but there was clearly a lot of love when Freddie was diagnosed with AIDS, he offered Jim a way out, but he refused to leave his side.
In a documentary, Jim recalled telling Freddie that he loved him and that he wasn’t going anywhere, and he didn’t. He nursed Freddie until his last breath in 1991, but their love for each other continues to live on in these rare pics.
