Mean Girls not only defined a generation, but also contributed to pop culture beyond the unthinkable. After thirteen years we still quote the lines and wear pink on Wednesdays, but there’s more to Mean Girls than what meets the eye! Check out these facts about the comedy that defined the 2000s.
MEAN GIRLS THE MUSICAL
The unthinkable has happened: a musical inspired by the movie will make its debut on October 31st, 2017 written by the film’s writer herself, actress Tina Fey! Let’s see how many one liners and catchy phrases this musical delivers to its die hard fans.
When you think of the ultimate Queen Bee, you think of Regina George. Well, Lindsay Lohan was actually cast as Regina, but decided to play Cady to give her image a softer look. If we consider how things turned up for both Lilo and Rachel McAdams you can almost taste the irony.
THE INFAMOUS HOT DOG QUOTE
We all know Mean Girls was a mass generator of every day applicable quotes, but did you know most of them had to be “toned down” a little to make it to PG+13? In that scene were Jason asked Cady if her muffin was buttered, he was supposed to ask if her cherry had been popped. Wow!
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO GLEN COCO?
You auditioned for Mean Girls but didn’t get a part? Well, if you live in an apartment across the street from where the film was being made you might get a role. That’s the story of Glen Coco played by David Reale. He wandered into the studio begging for free food and ended up being the character of the most famous quote from Mean Girls!
OBSESSED AND PROUD OF IT
The obsession with Mean Girls knows no boundaries and makes no distinctions. Mariah Carey herself included a quote from Regina in her song “Obsessed.” And many artists such as Cameron Diaz and Tina Fey confessed that they were mean girls in high school!
WRITTEN IN THE STARS?
A few years after this hit movie, Lindsay Lohan’s relationship with DJ Samantha Ronson was documented in every single media outlet. But, did you know Ronson wrote the song played during Cady and Aaron’s love scenes in Mean Girls? Talk about foreshadowing!
Probably the most adorable character, Damian graced us with his style and his rendition of ‘Beautiful’ by X-Tina. What we didn’t get to see was a deleted scene in which he auditioned for American Idol and punched the hated Simon Cowell after being called chubby. That scene would have been pure gold.
Let’s get serious for a minute. Mean Girls is essentially about female empowerment. Think about it! The movie features a high school Math teacher played by a woman, a girl who’s not afraid to be herself and to be called a lesbian for being so anti everything, (and pro herself!) and a school meeting to discuss the importance of not bringing sisters down with name calling.
LIMITED EDITION MERCH
From pencil sets with Mean Girls quotes to an actual Burn Book, the merch has kept the phenomenon of this movie alive and trending. In the UK, a beauty brand created a bath bomb called You Can’t Sit With Us, I mean…it doesn’t get any better than that.
CAST SHAKEUPS, THE SEQUEL
James Franco, Scarlett Johannsson and Ashley Tisdale. Ring a bell? All of them were considered to play supporting roles in Mean Girls. However, it’s now impossible to picture other people playing the roles of Aaron and Karen than Jonathan Bennett and Amanda Seyfried.
